Last the night the Mustangs took their talents and made the short road to their first indoor meet of the season at IU’s indoor track facility, Gladstein Fieldhouse!
The athletes have been working hard in the off-season and were ready to run, jump, throw and compete against someone other than their own teammates!
The night started with a bang as Nathan Bolin came out strong in the 60m Hurdles with a blazing time of 9.42 which is a PR over last years time. It was a solid run and allow him to finish 5th overall in the meet!
Our 60m dashers also competed well and were led by freshman John McGlothlin who posted a 7.36 time in his first ever varsity race!
Liam Nelson, a freshman who also ran XC, was the only Mustang to compete in the 3200m run and did so in amazing fashion! He was able to complete his race with a time of 11:32.28 which smashed his previous PR by over a minute!
Last year the Mustangs struggled in the Long Jump. This year shows lots of promise as 3 athletes stepped up and started fighting for varsity spots! Noah Bise led that charge last night with a best jump of 21’1.5″. This was a massive jump for the “rookie” long jumper and allowed him to put everyone in the are on notice that he will be a factor in the conference meet as well as the sectional and regional! It was also a strong enough jump to earn him 2nd place in the meet. Nathan Bolin also competed in LJ. He made his debut with a jump of 18’10”. A jump that earned him a 6th place finish! Tyler Strickland was the 3rd Mustang jumper and he was able to get a mark of 15’9″ in his debut (15th place).
Our 4 x 2 relay team finished 6th with a time of 1:40:60. Although the time is a decent time for so early in the season, the Mustangs hurt their chances of a top 2 or 3 finish with a shaky (I am being polite) hand-off exchange between their 2nd and 3rd runners. Ryan Hiatt and John McGlothlin had strong showings in the race as both posted times well under 25 seconds for their individual legs!
Our 4 x 4 team finished 5th with a time of 3:51:01. Lucas Poling (55.44) and Harrison Cottingham (54.06) had good turns in the race followed by an also strong performance from Zack Kovach (57.68). A very nervous and anxious Izaiah Doering (1:01.57), a freshman, competed in his first varsity race as he ran the 3rd leg of the relay!
The DMR was completed by 4 runners that had already competed in at least 1 event. The team did not finish the race in the place they would have liked but the effort was there from all 4 of the racers. They finished with a time of 12:47.58. ( Nelson, McGlothlin, Doering, Kovach)
David Brown led the high jump for the Mustangs and finished the evening just shy of his PR with a jump of 5’6″, good enough for a 5th place finish!
Wyatt Blake had a great first meet. Wyatt started learning the pole vault last season and quickly became on of the leaders of that group! He PR’d last night with a jump of 10’6″ which is a FOOT pr for the sophomore! Tyler Calvin and Caleb Waugh also competed last night and although they were not able to clear the starting height, both had good runs and it was beneficial for them to get meet experience. We are expecting them to make some noise as the season progresses!
The Mustang shot putters were in a tough field. The top 3 finishers in the SP were all over 45′ and the winner threw 50′ plus. Zach Johnson finished with a throw of 35’1 (15th), Jordan Headdy threw 33’9 (19th) and JT Waltz threw 32’6.5 (21st).
As a whole, the Mustangs had a great first meet! Many of the athletes competed very well! This is a strong start to the season and the goal is to finish the season even stronger! # HorseForce
