On Saturday, the Mustangs won the Edgewood Invitational for the first time since 2009.

“It’s the first time we’ve won this since I started coaching,” Mustangs coach Garry Lee said. “We’ve finished second about three times, so the guys are pretty pumped for the win.”

Edgewood posted a 338 to better Greencastle by nine shots. Owen Valley was fourth at 356 behind Rece Heckman’s 82, while Brown County was fifth at 368.

The Eagles’ Parker VanNess took medalist honors with a 73, using a back-nine birdie binge on Nos. 12, 13 and 15 to overcome his front-nine shortcomings and second-place Jaxson Parmelee of Greencastle.

Edgewood’s Brandt Guthrie and Jackson Wendel tied for third with 80s, while Landon Ringler added 86 and Parker Harrington a 92.

It was Guthrie’s career-best, 18-hole round thanks to some improved work on the greens.

“Brandt was so fired up, because he’d been putting so poorly and finally putted well today,” Lee said. “We might have finally got his putting figured out. I checked in on him with three or four holes left, then just stayed away so as not to jinx him.”

Ringler shot a 47 on the front nine, but told his coach he was going to shoot 39 on the back — and he did.

“Landon’s growing up a little bit, especially the way he came back on the back nine,” Lee said. “Parker’s new, not been playing long, and his score just keeps getting lower.

“It was a good day, a good win, and we’ll take it and get back to work.”
