The way Edgewood’s Olivia Werner and Annalyssa Crain gamely gave chase to state champion runner Emma Wilson of Greencastle sort of summed up the battle between the Mustangs and Tiger Cubs Tuesday night at the Western Indiana Conference girls’ track meet.

Edgewood coach Brian Rosenburgh calculated a 30-point loss on paper to the defending champs. And the seed times clearly put Wilson out of reach. She was at her best and so were the Mustangs, who narrowed the gap, but not enough, as Greencastle scored 1121/2 to repeat as WIC champs, with Edgewood second at 971/2.

Northview (711/2) won the battle for third, while Brown County was fourth (63) by a point over North Putnam. Owen Valley was seventh (381/2).

Greencastle won five events, three from Wilson, who broke her meet records in the 800 (2:20.05), 1,600 (4:59.79) and 3,200 (10:55.03). Edgewood answered by taking the 3,200 relay (10:11.89) and 1,600 relay (4:13.08) in near-meet record times, and got strong performances out of Alyssa Milah, Sarah Foster and Kaylee Meyer in particular.

“We went after it,” Rosenburgh said. “Emma running those four events (she also anchored the 1,600 relay) is crazy. And to do it so well, right? Their shot putters are strong.

“It’s not fun. Our team goal is to win conference, and we thought we had a good shot, and we did. We competed well. We just didn’t quite finish. It’s my last conference as coach, so it’s frustrating. But I’m not frustrated with the girls at all.”

Brown County’s Vivien Crimmins sped to a 16.04 in the 100 hurdles, with sister Evey eighth. Vivien was also second in the 300s in 49.52.

“She’s looking good,” BC coach Jay Myers said. “We’re excited. She ran a PR last week and ran a couple good races today, so she’s confident moving into sectional.”

Owen Valley had one champion in first-year vaulter Dazia Drake, who went 9-6, a half-foot short of the school record she reached earlier this year.

Taylor Acuff came up second in the discus (101-2) and third in the shot put (37-0) for the Mustangs and Emma Coffey came in third in the pole vault (9-0), tying her career best and the school record again. Milah was second in the 400 (1:01.62).

Crain still posted times of 5:19.80 and 11:17.65 in the 1,600 and 3,200 after hanging on Wilson’s hip as long as possible. Werner had a 2:25.01 in the 800, with Meyer charging hard to the finish to pass BC’s Anna Fleetwood for fourth (2:28.33). Meyer was also seventh in long jump and had legs for both winning relays.

“There’s no person on our team with more heart than Kaylee,” Rosenburgh said. “She’s a tough kid. Coming out of the bend, she was dying. You could see it. Oh my god, she’s going to fall to 10th. But she kicked it in. Same race, Olivia went with Emma the whole first lap, and I thought she was going to have to walk it in. So the 800 was awesome.”

Sarah Foster also moved up from ninth seeds to take fifth in the 3,200 and seventh in the 1,600 in PRs.

“The resilience she showed, I was impressed,” Rosenburgh said.

Kathleen McCann also did all she could for the BC cause, placing second in the 200 (27.21), third in the 100 (13.20) and seventh in the 400 (1:03.12).

Emelia Koester added a fourth in the 3,200 (12:26.57) and a sixth in the 1,600 (5:39.78) and had a leg for the runner up 3,200 relay.

“(Fourth is) exactly where I scored it out today,” Myers said. “Our goal was to have the girls try and beat their seed or get PRs. Kathleen was seeded eighth in the 100 and ended up third. And Vivien was eighth in the 300s and ended up moving up to second.

“Kathleen really stepped up. She had a tough meet, but we’d been planning on it all season. We tried to max her out on points, so she had a hectic meet.”

OV’s Lauren Godwin also settled for third in the high jump on misses after a trio reached 5-2. Jozee Spatta also had a strong night in the distance events, coming in fourth in the 1,600 (5:33.84) and seventh in the 3,200 (13:04.23).
