The Edgewood varsity shook of a sluggish first half, in which they had to overcome an 8-point deficit to lead by 2 at the break, and exploded for 29 third quarter points en route to a 75 – 47 whipping of South Putnam.
The host Eagles shot a torrid 70% on 2-pointers in the first half to keep the game close, but it was the Mustangs that warmed up in the 2nd half as they connected on 65% of their shots, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range to pull away. In addition, Edgewood continued their excellent shooting from the free throw line, hitting 14 of 15 for the game.
Derek Farkas led the Mustangs with 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting, while Trevor Taylor had 10 of his 17 points in the decisive 3rd quarter run–including a steal and breakaway dunk that brought the Edgewood crowd to its feet. In addition, Coleman Sater scored 12 points to go along with 7 rebounds, Zeke Powell scored 9, Logan Slabaugh had 7, and Parker Harrington had 6.
Rounding out the scoring for the Mustangs was Patrick Gardiner with 3 points and Caden Huttenlocker with 2.
The win kept Edgewood undefeated (3 – 0) in the New Year, and they will try to continue that trend when they travel to Spencer on Friday to take on rival Owen Valley.
